@ UCLA Fowler Museum

* Enjoy magical evening as the sun sets filled with sacred rhythms, songs, storytelling and dance representing the African cultural heritage preserved in Cuba of the Yoruba, Arara, Congo & Franco-Haitian. This performance is outdoors. Seating is on the grass & open on a first come basis.
Bring a blanket or mat.


* This presentation is planned in conjunction with the Fowler exhibition Transcultural Pilgrim: Three Decades of Work by José Bedia - a major retrospective and installation that explores Bedia's ties to his Cuban-based religion, its central African source, and his investigation of indigenous American beliefs.

ARRIVING BY CAR? PARKING INFO...
* Enter UCLA campus Lot 4 from Sunset Blvd. at Westwood Plaza and turn left into the Pay-By-Space area of the lot. Pay-By-Space parking is always available for Fowler visitors. Automated pay stations accept $1 and $5 bills and credit cards.The parking fee starts at $1 for 20 minutes and is a maximum of $11 for the whole day.  One hour parking costs $3, two hours $6. The Fowler is visible to your left (EAST) when you ascend from the elevator or stairs (follow pedestrian walkways, indicated by arrows on the map below).

ARTIST BIOS & VIDEOS

Ana Perez Herrera, is vocalist and dancer for los Muñequitos de Matanzas. Hailed as the "reigning regents of rumba" by the San Francisco Chronicle, "the essence of Cuba's musical soul" by the San Diego Union Tribune and "truly keepers of the sacred flame" by Latin Beat, Los Muñequitos are amongst the highest regarded masters of Afro-Cuban ritual and rumba music and dance. Founded in 1952, the group currently spans three generations of an extended family of musicians, singers and dancers that keep alive 500 years of African cultural legacy while continuing to innovate and inspire. Ana grew up within this rich family culture and has been performing with the group since her youth. She is famous for her powerful falsetto voice which adds an essential dimension the group's soulful sound.

Ramon "Sandy" Garcia Perez, a masterful Afro-Cuban percussionist and former principal drummer with Grupo AfroCuba de Matanzas, is recognized the world over for his expertise as an innovative percussionist and meticulous technical drum instructor. Sandy is founder of Yumurino and currently the director of his own Cuban ensemble, Sandy Perez y Su Ladè.

Luis "Luisito" Cancino Morales was one of Grupo Afrocuba de Matanzas' stellar all around performers: dancer, singer and percussionist. He joined AfroCuba in 1989 and toured the world. From the age of 14 on, he played in Sandy Perez's group, Yumurino in Cuba. Luisito recently joined los Muñequitos de Matanzas and participated in their U.S. tour.
